About the Workshop

Join illustrator Emma Block and Textile Designer Nancy Straughan for an inspirational afternoon learning how to create your own repeat patterns. During the workshop Emma and Nancy will teach you how transform your ideas into seamless, repeating patterns for use in countless projects. You will be taught everything you need to know including:

  • Colour theory
  • Repeat pattern styles
  • How to use scale
  • How to create a seamless repeat
  • How to create motifs and illustrations
  • How to create your own pattern collection
  • Where to print your designs
  • How to apply your patterns onto products
  • You will also learn all about Emma and Nancy's personal creative story and how they turned their love of patterns into a sucessful careers

Emma and Nancy's simple, step-by step process for designing patterns makes this workshop perfect for every designer, illustrator, or crafter looking for a fun project. This class takes the process off the computer so you can understand how pattern design works, get some insider tips on illustration and begin your new love of creating patterns.

About Your Tutors

Nancy Straughan is a textile designer and has her own range of homeware, stationery and accessories. She studied Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern design at university and set up her homeware and textile company after graduating. Nancy's clients include Marks and Spencer, Tommy Hilfiger, Debenhams and Graham & Brown wallpapers.

Emma Block is a freelance illustrator working across a broad range of industries, from publishing and licensing, to branding and packaging. She has worked with clients including Random House Canada, Bloomsbury, Stylist magazine and TimeOut. She approaches pattern design from an illustrative and painterly perspective.
